Tarot and Runes - tools for divination that work best together

For some reason, I have been feeling drawn to learn about and understand Tarot.  Just as last year I felt draw to learn about runes, I see now that these methods of divination are related, and, are as ancient as you can get when it comes to finding tools for self discovery, introspection and spiritual growth.

I have always felt that each individual has a responsibility to dig deeper into the meaning of their lives, to ask questions of themselves such as, "why am I here?" and "who am I".   It goes without saying that in the process of asking these questions I have been opened up to a variety of spiritual teachers, to abilities I didn't know I had, and to a new way of perceiving and responding to life that for me is all about experiencing joy in the NOW and serving others.

When I was doing my daily meditations this morning, I felt called to select a rune.  I chose:

Algiz:
Rune of Protection and OpportunityRita

Algiz means “sedge.” It is associated with opportunity for growth, safe refuge and protection. It represents a successful quest, awareness, wisdom, vision and clarity. These are the qualities that tie Algiz with the Hermit card for in the safe refuge of withdrawal and solitude the Hermit follows an inner quest for wisdom, vision and growth.

This Rune is related to the Tarot card The Hermit.

According to a fabulous Tarot site, The Hermit can be understood as:  "I have seen it all, I have done it all, and now I have chosen a life of solitary contemplation. I have found that the fire of truth burns within me, and my greatest joy is finding the stillness within so I may be at one with my Source.
I have withdrawn deep into the woods, for my connection with nature still feeds my soul. Seekers of the truth come to me, and I welcome pilgrims, teaching them to connect with their own divinity.
My concern is no longer so much with self, for I have found my genuine self and am secure in my value as an individual. I realize now that my greater responsibility is to the collective . My spiritual energy contributes to the evolution of the human spirit."

How interesting that I was feeling this so exactly and that when combined, the rune and the tarot make for a very accurate assessment of my current state of being.

I encourage you to take some time to look into the uses of these two tools.  Pick up a sack of Rune tiles at a book store or shop and pull one out, or just visit Runemaker.com  and go to the bottom of the page to see the list of rune symbols.  Select one that resonates with you and read the meaning.  I love doing this as a practice because it helps me look deeper into areas of myself and gives me a practice for further study.
Many blessings to you!

How to Use the Power of Runes

The rune I chose today is pictured above at the base of the Water Guardian's dress.  It is the symbol for Sustenance.

In Brian Froud's book, "The Runes of Elfland", each rune symbol has a story and a use.  This rune relates to water as the charm that sustains all life.  All waters be they streams, rivers, lakes, oceans, brooks, etc. have a guardian.  Where the waters spring out from the earth people have been drawn for healing and ceremony.  These places are known as sanctuary.

When we disregard the sanctity of water or set aside our stewardship responsibilites, we send the water guardians into dormancy.  When they go dormant, sorrow flows, lands die and turn to desert, forest turn barren, no refreshment is to be found.

Use this rune symbol by performing a ritual when you are near a water source.  Draw it in the sand.  Mark it on a stone and toss it into your reflection in the water.  Make a small sacrifice in honor of the water guardians and ask them to return so that we may once again be in harmony with all of Nature so that we can continue to enjoy Her blessings.

Oh, and by the way, bring a bag so you can collect as much trash as possible.  Do what you can to keep plastic and debris out of our precious waterways.

Paul Foster Case wrote in 1947

In Paul Foster Case's book titled, "The Tarot:  A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages", there is a passage in the chapter that explains the card "The Hanged Man" and I found it to be incredibly powerful to contemplate.  I copy it here for you and although the entire chapter gives it more meaning, I think you'll see why I thought this was important.

The card shows a man turned upside down, inverted, in a position contrary to that which we find most people.  Tradition says that St. Peter was crucified in this position - Peter was called "the rock of foundation".

Case writes, "For the basis of the occult (spiritual) approach to life, the foundation of the everyday practice of a person who lives the life of obedience to esoteric law, is the reversal of the more usual ways of thinking, speaking and doing.  ... This does not mean outspoken antagonism to others.  On the contrary, such a spirit is precisely the way of the world which occultists (spiritually focused people) endeavor to avoid.   Silent, unostentatious reversal of one's own way of life, combined with perfect tolerance of the ways of other people is the method of the practical occultist.

In what then does the reversal consist?  Primarily, in a reversal of thought, in a point-of-view which is just the opposite to that accepted by most persons.  At first there may seem to be no practical advantage in this, but just consider.  One need only look about him to see that most people are sick, in trouble, cannot get along with themselves or with the world.  Does it not become evident then that most people are in trouble because they have somehow put the cart before the horse in their practice of life?

In this scientific age, we know that everything is an expression of the working of the law of cause and effect. ...Thoughts are the seeds of speech and action.  What happens to us is what we have selected, whether the selection be conscious and intentional or unconscious and unpremeditated.  The emphasis is upon the importance of a changed view point and this change is no less than a total reversal.

Every human personality is completely dependent upon the All.  As soon as this truth is realized the only logical and sensible course of conduct is a complete self-surrender.  This surrender begins in the mind.  It is the submission of the personal consciousness to the direction of the Universal Mind.  Until we know that of ourselves we can do nothing, we shall never attain to adeptship.  The greater the adept, the more complete his personal self-surrender.

This total submission to Life Itself makes us intensely positive in relation to other persons and in relation to the conditions of our environment.  Nobody who follows this course ever becomes a human door mat.  In the face of some of the appearances confronting us as we go through life, we need something more than just "our" personal energies to carry us through.  In order to have courage and persistence in spite of seeming disappointment and difficulties we must know ourselves to be vehicles of a power to which nothing can be an insurmountable obstacle.

This thought does not imply that the Universal Will visits affliction, disease and poverty upon us.  It means that in spite of appearances the cosmic Will works always toward good, that the universal Will-to-Good can not possibly be defeated.  It meas that personality is known for what it is, a partial expression of the All, and that in consequence our personal notions of what is best for us may often be mistaken.  Our notions of the ways in which good is coming to us frequently fall short of being adequate anticipations of the blessings ahead.  Thus, so long as we continue to make false interpretations, the inexorable laws of the cosmos work out those interpretations in pain-bringing forms.

Yet pain itself is friendly, because it is educative.  Suffering, poverty , disease, inharmony and death all have their lessons for us.  These are the goads that prod the race onward in its search for truth.  Disease teaches us the laws of health, frictions in human relationships goad us into the discovery of the secret of harmony, and the wise declare that in the mystery of death lies hidden the secret of immortality.

Thoughts like these are the exact reverse of what most persons think.  Practices in mind-control and body-direction such as are taught by psychologists and occultists are laughed at by the world, and people who take them seriously are jeered at as men upside-down.  Yet the world's ridicule should be the best evidence that the occultists are right.  For the world is sick unto death, writhing in pain, hag-ridden by war, pestilence and famine; but the wise have found the way of health, of happiness and peace."

It's all about Passion

About a year ago I channeled a message from Mother Earth who was pleading for our help in saving the oceans.  I saw tiny living beings exploding and dying in mass annihilation.  Scientists are finding now that the ocean is being systematically poisoned and plastics are beginning to kill off the smallest, most important organisms at the bottom of the food chain.  Listen to the interview from WHYY here

I heard an interview on January 23rd in which Captain Charles Moore spoke about the Great Pacific Garbage patch.  Ever since listening to that interview, I have found myself unable to tear my eyes away from every piece of plastic in my environment.  As I look at each thing:  the tab from a bag of bread, the zip top bag from lunch, my contact lense case, I wonder if it will end up in the ocean and it made me so very passionate about wanting to educate myself and others about how to treat various types of plastics.

I have a house cleaning company and see so many of my customers not recycling when there are convenient programs in their townships and I started to feel very cynical about possibly doing anything to affect change.  One day as I was driving home, I just decided that I should go to a local park in my town and start picking up trash along the banks of the little creek that runs through it.  In no time I had filled an entire 32 gallon garbage bag with plastic bottles, aluminum cans and a mountain of assorted debris.  I couldn't believe how much was there. I took it home and sorted it for recycling.

While I was at the park, two people stopped to talk to me about what I was doing.  I just said that I had to do something about the trash.  One woman told me about a program at Whole Foods markets where they collect recycles #5 and also that an Aveda salon in Cherry Hill, NJ collects plastic bottle caps for recycling.  I wondered why I didn't know about that.

I want to do my part to educate.  Thanks to this story, the Angels have fanned the small spark inside me that loves this earth so much and now I am fully engulfed in the drive to do everything I can to make a difference.

Take a minute out of your day to notice the trash in your environment and pick it up.  Set an example for your children and tell them why we have to do our part to save our planet.  It only takes a little momentum to get something good going......yeah!

A little reminder from the Angelic Community

Love is and so are you.  Divinity exists in all things – and so do you.  You are divine.  You are holy.  You are also a creation of Divinity’s mind.  You see, just as you would imagine a picture that you paint, Divinity or Love created you as a reflection of its thoughts and meanderings.  Just as you would want to capture an essence, a feeling or just something beautiful, so has Divinity created you.  You are not alone and never can be alone.  It is impossible to think of the concept “alone” for us.  It simply does not compute!  For even when you are stranded on a desert island, you are among friends.  The sands, the waters, the fish, the trees, the birds, the sunshine, the oxygen molecules are all with you.  And that is just on the physical realm or level!  Stop for a moment and consider where you are among the stars, among the spirit world.  Please understand there is nothing more important for you to know right know than that you are not and never can be alone, unassisted or unsupported.  That is simply impossible.  Is a drop of water alone?  No, because it can be evaporated back into the atmosphere from which it was formed and be used again to create another raindrop.  Matter is neither created nor destroyed – it simply IS and always will be.  You are no different.  Your energy, your spirit is like the drop of water.
Give thanks for your uniqueness, and share your talents with others. Serve humanity and the earth.  Many Blessings!

My Declaration of Divinity

Okay, so you've been listening to Talk-n-Angels Radio Show and you hear me talking about how the angels and guides have given me direct downloads of wisdom and understanding.  I have heard their messages.  I talk to them every day.  I fully understand their love for us and God's love for us.  Now it's time for me, Rita Strough, to make my own declaration of Divinity.

I hold these truths to be self evident, that all people are Divine Beings, infinitely perfect, timeless, free, intelligent, whole, fully supported, blessed, cherished, and loved beyond human capacity to understand love.

I am a divine being, and so are you.
I am beautiful, and so are you.
I am powerful, and so are you.
I am filled with light and love, and so are you.
I resonate peace, and so do you.

Living here, now, I vow to pay attention to everything in my experience:  my thoughts, my feelings, my desires.  I vow to listen with attention and to speak thoughtfully knowing that words are most powerful when spoken with intention.

I vow to give of myself every day, freely and joyously, knowing that this could be my last day here on earth.

I devote myself to seeing the best in people and situations.

We are born here to learn, to love and to be angels to one another.

I choose to live in Love and imagine a world filled with peaceful beings, cooperating in harmonious unity, to fulfill our dreams, fully engaged with our spiritual family of angels and light beings, enjoying our duality of heaven and earth, spirit and flesh, co-creating our world.

Set forth this day, December 6, 2011
